The European Union supports the Red Cross efforts in bringing relief to victims of floods in North Korea

The European Commission allocates € 132,520 (CHF 163,000) to bring relief to flood victims in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Torrential rains since early July 2013 have caused severe floods and landslides in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).  An estimated 4,000 families have lost their homes and some 50,000 people have been displaced. According to government data, 33 people have died while 18 remain missing. The most affected areas are north and south Pyongan, north Hwanghae and south Hamgyong provinces.

The European Commission has decided to provide CHF 163,000 (approx. € 132,520) to bring relief to the victims of these floods. This aid will be used to provide relief items such as basic household items, water purification tablets and  jerry cans for storing water to 5,000 families. The Red Cross will also conduct hygiene promotion activities. The funds are channelled through the DPRK Red Cross Society who operates with funding from the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
