On US-Cuba relations: Statement of the Spokesperson

The announcement that the United States and Cuba are to restore diplomatic relations and reopen Embassies is a truly historic milestone on the path towards full normalisation of relations between the countries.

It represents an encouraging signal for the international community, showing that relations between the two countries have entered a new phase through negotiations.

At the same time, the EU encourages both sides to continue working on some outstanding issues, in particular the lifting of the embargo, which is an outdated and inconsistent instrument within the evolving context.

As confirmed during the visit of HR/VP Federica Mogherini to Havana and the recent Political dialogue held between the EU and Cuba in Brussels, the EU is ready to further accompany Cuba in its modernisation process.
