The European Union and Japan held their 8th round of negotiations toward a bilateral Strategic Partnership Agreement in Tokyo on 23 April. Gerhard Sabathil, Director for North Asia and the Pacific at the EU's European External Action Service headed the European side, while the Japanese team was led by Satoshi Suzuki, Deputy Director-General of the European Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Negotiators confirmed progress in some areas of cooperation, and deepened their understanding toward a convergence of their respective views.
The next round is expected to be held in Brussels in June at the earliest.
