EU takes part in meeting of International Contact Group on Afghanistan and Pakistan

Ambassador Franz-Michael Mellbin, European Union Special Representative for Afghanistan, attended the Tokyo Meeting of the International Contact Group (ICG) on Afghanistan and Pakistan on 15 May. Ambassador Mellbin and other participants discussed a range of issues of common interest on Afghanistan, as well as recent and upcoming developments. During his visit, Ambassador Mellbin also met extensively with Japanese counterparts and experts.

Commenting on the roles played by the EU and Japan in Afghanistan, Ambassador Mellbin said: "The EU and Japan share similar views and interests in promoting peace and development in the region. Japan remains a key partner for Afghanistan. Its engagement underlines Japan's role also as a global actor. We will continue the work closely with Japan, also at multilateral level, as Afghanistan goes through its transition".

Focusing on upcoming developments, Ambassador Mellbin welcomed continued Japanese support for the government and people of Afghanistan.
