The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"High Representative Catherine Ashton held a phone-conversation with the new Foreign Minister of South Korea Yun Byung-se today. In the discussion, she confirmed the commitment of the European Union to build on the excellent relationship with South Korea, in particular through the implementation of the Framework Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement.

The High Representative and Minister Yun also discussed the latest foreign policy developments, in particularly regarding the situation in DPRK on which they agreed to remain in close touch. The EU strongly supports the approach of the U- Security Council and is calling upon DPRK to reengage constructively with the international community and in particular the members of the Six-Party Talks, in order to work towards lasting peace and security on a nuclear-free Korean peninsula and as the best means to secure a more prosperous and stable future for the DPRK."
