Statement by President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy on the passing away of Baroness Thatcher

It is with great sadness that I received the news of the passing away of Baroness Thatcher.

Ms Thatcher, as she then was, was a remarkable personality and one of the most influential European leaders of her time. During her eleven years in government, Ms Thatcher was a transformative force in the United Kingdom and equally important in shaping the European agenda.

On behalf of the European Union I would like to send my sincere condolences to the family and to the people and the government of the United Kingdom.
