High Representative Mogherini underlines importance of EU-US ties

The relationship between the European Union and the United States is strong and goes beyond any change of administration, High Representative Federica Mogherini said at the end of a two-day visit to Washington for talks with the new US administration and senior members of Congress.

"We believe that there are many fields on which we coincide and where it is vital for the US to work together with the European Union and for the European Union to work with the US, be it in counter-terrorism, be it economic growth, job creation. Having said that, we are maybe entering a time of a more pragmatic and transactional kind of relationship with the United States, based on EU principles and interests", Mogherini said.

"Our economic ties are incredibly relevant. We are the first market for the United States, we are the second economy in the world and the relevance, the impact of the European Union cannot be underestimated even if I know that sometimes this is put at question here and in the European Union."
