Nuclear security & safety centre stage at Washington Summit

Leaders from around the world gathered in Washington from 31 March to 1 April for the fourth Nuclear Security Summit hosted by US President Barack Obama. The EU delegation was led by High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini and President Donald Tusk.

As the world is faced with the risk that terrorist organisations get access to vulnerable nuclear materials, the Summit focused on preventing nuclear terrorism and the smuggling of nuclear materials. To do so the international community needs to join forces, share information and cooperate, Mogherini suggested during her trip to the US.

Speaking from Washington, the High Representative praised President Obama for the vision he set out in Prague at the beginning of his mandate, "the vision of a world free from nuclear weapons." She stressed that nuclear security has to be "part of a greater strategy, together with the commitment to non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament."

In the sidelines of the Summit, Federica Mogherini took part in a meeting with the E3/EU+3 Heads of State and with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s general director, Yukiya Amano, to review the implementation of the deal on Iran's nuclear program.
