European Higher Education Fair sees record number of participants -Universities showcased in Europe-wide education fair-

The Delegation of the European Union to Japan, together with several other entities[1], will organise in May the 'European Higher Education Fair 2014'. Following on the highly successful fairs of 2012 and 2013, this year's event will be the biggest ever, with 62 booths in Tokyo and three EU Member States (Austria, Lithuania and the Netherlands) taking part for the first time.

The event aims to showcase to Japanese students, researchers and those already in employment who are looking to bolster their career with additional qualifications some of the most interesting higher education programmes that Europe has to offer. The 2013 event saw nearly 2,000 visitors attend over the three days of the fair.

At the fair, which will take place on 16-17 May at Meiji University's Surugadai Campus in Tokyo and 18 May at Doshisha University's Imadegawa Campus in Kyoto, 36 higher education institutions and 21 embassies/official education promotion agencies from 14 European countries will provide the latest information on study programmes and courses. The Tokyo event will offer individual presentations by the institutions, as well seminars on opportunities for study and research abroad.

Europe is the global leader in providing study programmes for international students, with more than one million international students benefitting from its high academic standards, reasonable tuition fees, advanced research facilities and diverse cultural and social fabric. Figures provided by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development show that the 21 EU Member States in the OECD host some 40% of foreign students, the largest proportion within the OECD.

The Japanese government is stepping up efforts to ensure the development of internationally minded 'global professionals' to suit the needs of businesses operating in a global marketplace. Against such a backdrop, the European Higher Education Fair offers an opportunity for Japanese students to learn about the wide variety of study programmes at European academic institutions available to them.
